Green Shopping

Look out for symbols on products when shopping. An "ecomark" エコマーク is found on items which can be easily recycled and also on items which have been recycled. A "green mark" グリーンマーク is found on paper/wood products which have been recycled to some degree. An "eco shop mark" signifies shops which use less packaging, etc.

There are organic food stores and "green" shops throughout Japan. However, if there is not one in your area, or it doesn't stock a product you want, Tengu, Warabemura, and People Tree (operated by Global Village) stock a comprehensive range of organic food and environmentally-friendly products and deliver to anywhere in Japan.

We are currently putting together a directory of Eco-Businesses in Japan. For more information, please see our current projects page.

From AboutCom's frugal living site: Purchase durable goods rather than disposable items. The cost may be higher initially, but in the long run you can save money. Read consumer magazines and contact consumer organizations before making a major purchase. By being informed you will make a long-lasting choice.
