20 June 26 2005 (Sun) - Miura Peninsula Hiking and Garbage Pickup!!!

We joined the NGO JAMBO at Miura Peninsula, Kanto area, for a coastal walk with nice sea views, beaches and caves. Unfortunately there was lots of rubbish, but the 25 or so participants of various nationalities helped with that. For more information about JAMBO and upcoming events, see the JAMBO web-site.

July 16 2005 (Sat) - Baker, Baker Chopstick-Holder Maker!

Help discourage the unsustainable use of disposable chopsticks by making cotton holders to carry non-throw-away chopsticks. This gathering will be at Toyama-ken, close to Ishikawa, Niigata, and Gifu.

"What does this possibly have to do with baking" you ask? The host, eco-siger Emily has recently made her own wood burning brick-and-clay oven. So with nearby JETs, this will be a bake-off sewing event!

On the menu for the day: pizza, vegan lasagna, banana bread, or whatever else people are thinking of baking while making chopstick cases. These will be for incoming BEE SIG people and anyone else wanting to dazzle their fellow staff or restaurant-goers with beautiful Japanese-patterned chopstick sacks. Mail order OK! For more info, contact the ecosig coordinator

August 2-11 2005 - Asian Rural Institute

The Asian Rural Institute is a largely self-sustaining organic community located in Tochigi-ken. Every year, 20-30 young leaders from Asian and African countries are chosen to train in organic farming and rural leadership at the center for 9 months. BEE SIG members will be joining these people for one or more days between the above dates.

There is some interesting stuff to see and do, e.g. organic 'duck' rice (aigamo), grey water aquaculture, methane biogas, and making tofu. Accommodation is ¥1600 per night, while food is ¥400 per meal. To book a place, contact the institute by e-mail. For more information, see their website.
